From Conventional Medicine to Holistic Healing: My Transformation

For over 25 years, I worked within the conventional medical model as a Registered Nurse. My training was thorough in anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and disease management — but one thing that was never emphasized was the limbic system. I became skilled at charting, monitoring, and implementing medical care plans, but the emotional brain — the very system that links our thoughts, memories, and emotions to physical health — was largely invisible.

Emotions, trauma, and the mind-body connection were treated as separate from physical health. What I’ve since learned is that this separation leaves a huge gap in true healing.

The Limbic System & Healing

The limbic system is not just about emotions — it’s about survival. It shapes how we respond to stress, how safe we feel, and even how our bodies heal. When this system is stuck in a chronic state of fear, grief, or hypervigilance, the body responds with inflammation, hormonal imbalance, and chronic disease. Healing becomes nearly impossible if the nervous system remains on high alert.

Holistic medicine taught me that working with the limbic system is critical for true healing. Practices such as breathwork, grounding, prayer, journaling, and even simple somatic awareness help calm and retrain the emotional brain. This allows the body to shift from “survival” into “repair.”

Brain

The Missing Piece: The Vagus Nerve

Another revelation for me was the vagus nerve — the body’s longest cranial nerve, connecting the brain to the heart, lungs, and gut. In traditional medicine, it’s rarely discussed outside of surgical or diagnostic contexts. Yet it plays a central role in regulating the parasympathetic nervous system — our “rest and digest” state.

When the vagus nerve is activated, heart rate slows, digestion improves, inflammation decreases, and the mind experiences calm. It’s God’s built-in pathway for peace and restoration. Simple practices like deep breathing, humming, singing, prayer, and time in community stimulate this nerve and help reset the nervous system.

Even more, Frequency Specific Microcurrent (FSM) complements this design by directly working with the nervous system. FSM gently stimulates tissues with microcurrents that can help reduce inflammation, restore cellular energy, and reset the body’s patterns of stress. By engaging the vagus nerve, FSM supports the nervous system in shifting back into that restful, healing state.

God's Perfect Design

What amazes me most is how this all aligns with Scripture:

  • “Do not fear” appears 365 times in the Bible — a daily reminder that living in fear harms us, while trust in Him brings peace.
  • The command to “make a joyful noise,” sing, and worship isn’t just spiritual practice — it stimulates the vagus nerve, strengthens resilience, and fosters healing.
  • The call to “renew our minds” is a practical pathway to retrain the limbic system, transforming thought patterns and reducing stress.

The overlap is breathtaking: God’s Word was already guiding us toward health, wholeness, and restoration.

My Perspective Today...

Looking back, I see how incomplete my conventional training was. The limbic system, the vagus nerve, and tools like FSM are not optional “extras” — they are essential pathways of healing. Ignoring them is like trying to heal a wound while ignoring blood flow.

Healing is not just about labs, procedures, or medications. It’s about creating safety in the body, regulating the nervous system, and inviting both the mind and spirit into the process. This is where true transformation happens — not just symptom management, but restoration and renewal in alignment with God’s perfect design.
